I Ride For Those Who Can’t

These words popped into my head during a ride years ago, and I’ve repeated them over and over again ever since.  I don’t know exactly when they came to me or the specific circumstances which caused me to think them, but they’ve been powerful words to me.

A friend of mine and avid cyclist, Greg, fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He lost his ability to ride his bike during this struggle, and while I had hoped the Tour videos I gave him to watch would help, they were a poor substitute.

My brother John was active and athletic growing up, but was invaded by a rare disease many years ago that has wracked his body and stolen much of his mobility.  While his spirit has been strong throughout this incredible ordeal, his life has been changed forever.

These have been two powerful influences in my life.  This phrase could have come to me as a result of one of them, or a combination of them which then led me to think of all those who are in similar circumstances.

Regardless of where the words came from, I say them often.  I say them during those times I have to dig the deepest to find another level of determination or strength.  I say them on those rare and perfect days when the entire ride feels like I have a tailwind.  And I say them on rides between these two extremes.

I realize how lucky I am to be able to get on my bike and ride whenever I want to, and you are lucky as well.  There are millions who are not so fortunate.  We must savor the days we get on our bikes and not take them for granted.

But simply knowing we’re lucky doesn’t solve anything or doesn’t help those who can’t get out and ride.  Rather, we need to put our talents and abilities to good use.

But how?  How can our ability to ride help those less fortunate?  Give it some thought and add your ideas below.  Yes, that means you.  Let’s get some discussion going!

Then GET OUT AND RIDE – FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T.
